Event Recap: AONL 2023

I recently attended the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) 2023 in Anaheim, California. The event brought together nursing leaders from around the country to discuss pressing issues facing healthcare. With a particular focus on addressing staffing challenges and the power of technology, AONL 2023 provided valuable insights and opportunities for attendees to drive positive change in healthcare.

I was fortunate enough to attend two days of this jam-packed schedule and learn from both speakers and attendees. During my time attending breakout sessions and exploring the exhibit hall, I overheard a number of thought-provoking conversations that eloquently captured the essence of the event. Let’s dive in!

“Recipe for retention = flexibility, development, and recognition.”

One of the most common recurring themes I heard throughout the event was nurse retention. As on-the-job demands escalate and nurse burnout rates continue to rise, retaining highly skilled healthcare professionals is critical. The recipe for retention, as highlighted by one of the session presenters, was identified as a combination of flexibility, development, and recognition.

These three ingredients can collectively contribute to greater retention rates and overall organizational success. Flexibility encourages increased employee satisfaction which works to mitigate job-related burnout. Recognition of a job well done works to boost morale and foster a strong, healthy work culture people want to be a part of.

“Everyone wants a mobile solution.”

In today’s face paced, digital world, mobility has become ingrained in our lives. And it’s not just good for doom-scrolling on social media; it can also play a crucial role in advancing healthcare organizations.

After attending AONL 2023, it’s clear that healthcare professionals, like everyone, are seeking convenient and accessible tools to help them perform their roles efficiently and effectively. With the rise of telehealth and remote work opportunities, healthcare organizations must keep up with trending technologies to meet the evolving needs of their workforce (and patients)! Mobile, on-demand solutions provide the perfect solution to the fast-paced, high-stakes world of healthcare.

“If we don’t think outside of the box (by utilizing technology) we are going to continue to lose our nurses.”

The power of technology in healthcare staffing was another central focus at AONL 2023. If I had a nickel for every time I heard someone mention the importance of technology, I would be completely weighed down by coins!

It’s clear that nurses are frustrated with the outdated, manual processes that bog them down and keep them from doing the patient-centered work that matters most. By adopting automated technologies, healthcare organizations can streamline processes, improve efficiency, and enhance productivity for staff – helping them help others.

“The future is data that I can actually do something with – Predictive algorithms essentially.”

Throughout the event, I overheard a number of conversations about data, but one conversation stuck out to me more than the others. This conversation wasn’t so much about data, but the limitations of the data nurse leaders often have access to. Collecting data is always useful, but it can be hard to put it into effect if it’s hard to digest and doesn’t include proper insights.

That’s where predictive analytics and actionable insights come in. Predictive algorithms go beyond the figures and analyze vast amounts of data to identify patterns, anticipate needs, and provide valuable insights. By harnessing the power of predictive analytics, healthcare organizations can proactively address challenges such as staffing shortages and resource allocation.
